Quick information on alpaca:
Did you know that alpaca, by its scientific name Vicugna pacos, is a domestic animal by nature and can live around 20 years when well cared for? No alpaca is wild, as they derive from vicuรฑas living high in the Andes mountains. Cousins โโof llamas, which are a domestication of another Andean species, the guanaco, alpacas are valued for their extremely soft and versatile wool, superior in terms of warmth compared to duck down and more resistant than mohair wool, all while remaining more breathable than thermal woolens. Although their appearance is tender and fuzzy, alpacas do not hesitate to spit to deter an enemy.
Peru has the largest herd of alpacas in the world, where they measure between 48 and 54 inches and weigh 106 to 185 pounds. An alpaca can live to an old age; the longevity record for the species is 28 years. The average height of alpacas at the withers is approximately 36 inches, and females breed from age 2, giving birth to only one calf at a time.
