Discovering the Panda:
Currently, there are only 1,864 pandas in the world, which classifies them as an endangered species. Naturally present in restricted regions of southwest China, on the edge of the Tibetan plateau, around 600 individuals are recorded in different animal parks.
Did you know that the scientific name of the panda is Ailuropoda melanoleuca? These mammals primarily feed on bamboo, consuming large quantities. With a life expectancy in nature of up to 20 years, pandas stand between 4 and 5 feet tall and weigh around 300 pounds, which leads them to be very adept when climb in search of their food. And, impressive swimmers, pandas have more than one string to their bow!
Pandas spend at least half their day feeding, i.e. 12 hours a day , during which an adult can ingest up to 28 pounds of bamboo. They inhabit the high altitude bamboo forests of central China, preferring humid, cool climates. Despite their lazy appearance, they are agile climbers and efficient swimmers, while remaining solitary animals far from inhabited areas.A wild panda will only evolve in specific and restricted habitats.
With a highly developed sense of smell, male pandas use this ability to mark their territory and to find their way during the breeding season in spring. At birth, a baby panda is a pristine white color and will only develop its characteristic coat with age. They are born very small, about 1/900th the size of their mother, with distinct characteristics such as black spots around the eyes, black ears and a dark longitudinal stripe down their back.
Dimensions of the Panda once assembled: 41x39x30 cm.
